Labor Day is traditionally hailed as the last bash of the summer season, complete with bountiful barbeques and the long-awaited start of football season. But it is also a venerable holiday that honors American workers and the contributions they have made to the strength and prosperity of our country.
Want to create a holiday that’s both significant and celebratory? Here are a few simple, creative ways to take your Labor Day to the next level.
HONOR HISTORY
According to the Department of Labor, the first Labor Day was organized by the New York Central Labor Union and celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. Delve into the history of the holiday by reading about the American labor movement. Watch enlightening Labor Day videos on YouTube or History.com. Talk to retired seniors about their lifetime experiences in the workforce
APPRECIATE APTITUDE
Celebrate our country’s workers with your kids by having them choose a vocation that piques their interest and create a collage that represents the profession with clippings and artwork. Visit the library for books on the chosen occupation. Find someone in the field to interview or arrange a tour of the job location.
TREAT THE TEAM
A little gratitude goes a long way when it comes to your workmates. Bring in baked goods or small gift cards for the group. Give out fun awards like “Best Team Player” or “Most Company Spirit.” Leave notes saying how much you value their hard work and contributions.
LABOR OF LOVE
Make your Labor Day even more meaningful by doing some labor for those in need. Volunteer with organizations like Habitat for Humanity who build affordable housing for low-income families.
